Western Cape Cross Country Marathon Championships 2016

wc logo

The Western Cape Cross Country Marathon (XCM) Championships 2016 will be hosted by Dryland at the Ladismith Cheese 7Weekspoort Mountain Bike Challenge on 1 October 2016. The Start Venue is the Amalienstein Packing shed in Amalienstein and the Finish Venue is the Ladismith High School in Ladismith. Please find the relevant information on the website: http://www.7weekspoortmtb.co.za/.

“The Ladismith Cheese 7weekspoort MTB Challenge, in the spectacular landscape of the title town, and its neighbouring missionary villages in the Klein Karoo, is a real classic. Riders will experience the raw scenic majesty of the poort itself – a riot underscored by a botanical circus – on a ride paced to make you know you’ve had your physical moneys-worth in addition to the almost overwhelming scenic value. Convenient, accessible and comfortable… One of South Africa’s greatest one-dayers!” (Excerpt from the website)

The Western Cape XCM Championships 2016 Categories are as follows:

  1. Nippers, Sprogs and Sub-Juniors – 26km
  2. Youth, Juniors, Master Women, Grand Master Women and Grand Master Men – 40km
  3. Elite, Sub-Veteran Men and Women, Veteran Men and Women and Master Men – 82km

Please take note of the following:

  •  No rider under 19 may compete in the 82km race as per Cycling South Africa (CSA) rules.
  • Parents may ride with children U/10 (Nippers) and U/12 (Sprogs) but must remain behind the child at all times and not interfere with other riders.
  • Parents may not ride with children U/14 (Sub-Juniors) and upwards under any circumstances.
  • Transgressions may be reported to race officials on the day.
  • Transgressions will result in the qualifying rider being disqualified from the race.

How to qualify for Provincial XCM Colours:

  • No individual can qualify for Western Cape XCM Colours without a CSA license (Elite and Junior) or CSA membership (All other categories).
  • It should be noted that Provincial Colours can only be attained once an individual has received Regional Colours. Each of the regions should organise their own regional marathon mountain biking series.
  • This means that, if an individual has received his Regional Colours and has come in the top three of his/her category at 7Weekspoort, he/she will receive Western Cape Colours.
  • No colours are awarded at the Ladismith Cheese 7Weekspoort Mountain Bike Challenge/Western Cape XCM Championships 2016 because some of the regional series’ are not complete yet. This is the reason why only medals will be awarded and not certificates on the day of the Championships.

Looking forward to 2016…(updated)

The election of the executive committee of the WPMTB Commission for the 2016 calendar year was done at the AGM held on 15 October 2015. There are still many things that need to be finalised; including next year’s calendar, the venues and courses required to challenge you, but still meet the variety of age groups that make up WPMTB constituents.

The committee is hard at work to finalise the list of recipients that qualify for Western Province and Western Cape Marathon Colours. The list of recipients will be released soonest and unfortunately, due to various factors beyond our control, we cannot provide an exact date. We will have a Marathon Colours ceremony in January 2016.

Preliminary dates are:

Cross Country (XCO) – WP Cup Series

  • 23 January 2016
  • 13 February 2016
  • 20 February 2016
  • 9 April 2016

Downhill (DHI)

  • 13 February 2016 – WP Cup Series
  • 28 February 2016 – WP and SA Cup Series
  • 10 April 2016 – WP Cup Series
  • 1 May 2016 – WP and SA Cup Series

Preliminary date for the WC Champs for XCO and DHI is:

  • 28 May 2016 – XCO; 29 May 2016 – DHI

Date for the second SA Cup race in Cape Town for XCO:

  • 27 February 2016

Our drive for 2016 is bridging the gap between the Spur schools series and other XCO riders to participate in the WP Cup series and an improvement in the marketing of our events. Key to this is the message that because it says Western Province or Western Cape, it does not preclude anyone from entering or participating (and supporting) these events. Even though XCO and DHI are demanding disciplines, it does not mean that you need any specific experience other than to turn up on the day to participate.

Next year we would encourage as many schools to participate as is feasibly possible. As a committee we understand the traditional sporting pressures from schools and respect obligations in this regard. Mountain biking is the second fastest growing sport in the country and whilst we realise the barrier to entry can appear high, all you need is a bike, helmet and some courage to come and take part.

The commission is a passionate bunch of mostly MTB parents. Over the past four years it has grown into an efficient MTB machine, and in 2015 delivered a number of very successful events across the Western Cape including the WP Cup Series, the WC Champs and the SA National Champs in Stellenbosch. We also introduced the Nissan Trailseeker series to the Western Province to fill a vitally required marathon series.

In the next year we plan to maintain the high standards we have set in 2015, but also to promote and increase participation at all levels as well as providing education regarding the rules and regulations that govern the sport of mountain biking.

In the next few weeks and months we will be providing:

  1. The list of recipients that qualify for Western Province and Western Cape Marathon Colours
  2. The final (sanctioned) calendar for 2016
  3. Marathon colours ceremony date
  4. Some clarity as to how the regions and provinces work
  5. How colours work and are awarded

So watch this space.

Western Cape Marathon Championships/ Western Cape Marathon Colours.

unnamed (1)

There has been a proliferation of queries regarding Western Cape Colours associated with 7Weekspoort. By way of definition, mountain biking in the Western Cape is divided into three clear regions.  The three regions are as follows:

  1. West Coast
  2. Eden (comprises of Eden itself and the Central Karoo)
  3. Western Province (comprises of the Cape Metropole, Winelands and Overberg)

The 7Weekspoort mountain bike challenge doubles as the Western Cape Mountain Biking Marathon Championships. It should be noted that Provincial Colours can only be attained once an individual has received Regional Colours. Each of the three regions should organise their own regional marathon mountain biking series or championships.

In the Western Province the Nissan Trailseeker Series serves as the Western Province Mountain Bike Series. This transpires over four events of which the best three results will count for an individual. Based on this, individuals in the Western Province will attain Western Province Colours. In the same manner West Coast and Eden have to go through the same process.  Once the mountain bike commissions in the West Coast, Eden and Western Province have submitted the names for regional colours, Western Cape Provincial Colours will be determined.

This means that, if an individual has received his regional colours and has come in the top three of his/her category at 7Weekspoort they will receive Western Cape Colours. The Western Province Series concludes with the fourth round of the Nissan Trailseeker Series at Meerendal on 14 November. It will therefore only be possible to determine Western Cape Mountain Biking Marathon Colours after the conclusion of this event in order that the Western Province Mountain Bike Commission submits their regional colours first. This means that, in the interim, no colours are awarded for the 7Weekspoort Mountain Bike Challenge/Western Cape Mountain Biking Marathon Championships. This is the reason why only medals were awarded and not certificates on the day of the Championships.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM)

As per the Western Province Mountain Bike Constitution, a minimum 14 day notice period is required for the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Please therefore accept this as official notification for the AGM which is currently set for the 14th of October 2015. The venue is provisionally booked at the Western Province Cricket Club. Commencement will begin at 17h30.

More details will follow in due course.

The Annual General Meeting will be the forum in which the office bearers for the Western Province Mountain Bike Commission will be appointed for the following year. Nominations for the positions of office bearers should be submitted in writing to Shani Morton (shani.morton6@gmail.com) no later than seven days before the AGM. Nominations must make provision for a proposer and countersigned by a nominee.

It is important to note that all office bearers need to be elected at the Annual General Meeting. Current office bearers who wish to stay on and serve the commission will have to make themselves available for re-election. Voting for office bearers will take place at the AGM.

After serving as Chairperson for two years of the WPMTBC and having been involved in Provincial racing for four years, I will not be standing for re-election as Chairman of the WPMTBC. At this moment it is not certain as to, whether or not, I will make myself available for a position of office bearer.

It is imperative that individuals make themselves available to serve on the commission. Without the Commission there will be no Western Province XCO or DHI Series, Western Cape Championships, Western Province Marathon Series or Western Cape Marathon Championships.

WESTERN PROVINCE (REGIONAL) COLOURS AND WESTERN CAPE (PROVINCIAL) COLOURS

The proposed list for XCO for both Western Province and Western Cape are included below. Please review these lists and if there are any queries, this should be raised to Stephen van der Walt (Stephen.vanderWalt@novus.holdings) by no later than close of business on Wednesday, 23 September 2015.  Unfortunately the DHI lists are not yet finalised and this will be circulated in due course. Any queries raised will be presented to the Commission for deliberation.

Western Province Colours

Both the Western Province and Western Cape Colours Ceremony will be held immediately after the AGM on 14 October 2015 at the Western Province Cricket Club.

At the ceremony the certificate for both the Western Province and Western Cape Colours will be handed out. At present there are no sponsors for clothing. Should any person be prepared to offer a sponsorship for both Western Province and Western Cape Colours, please contact Shani Morton (shani.morton6@gmail.com).
If clothing incorporates a hat, sponsors are allowed to carry their name on the left and right side of the hat. If sponsored clothing includes a jacket/top, sponsorship logo is allowed on the nape of the neck and on one side of the chest.

In brief, Western Province Colours are awarded on the following basis:

  • First and Second position in the Western Province XCO Cup Series and there must be at least five individual participants;
  • If an individual participates but does not qualify for the Western Province XCO Cup Series they can still qualify through coming first or second in the Western Cape Championships (minimum of three participants, a top three place in either the SA XCO Cup Series or SA National Championships).

In brief, Western Cape Colours are awarded on the following basis:First place in Western Cape Championships (less than five entrants) or top three (five or more participants);

  • Top three in the SA National Championships (less than fifteen entries) or top five (where there are fifteen or more participants);
  • Top three in the SA National Cup Series.
