We will meet at Bloemendal Wine Estate on the 28 th of May 2016 to see who will be the Western Cape XCO Champs. Our Western Cape (WC) riders have showed guts, tenacity and determination during the four race WC series. The series took us from Rhebokskloof in Windmeul to Helderberg in Somerset West and finally to Picardie Guest Farm in Paarl. The series was tough and unrelenting and the riders had to deal with challenging tracks and weather.

The track at Bloemendal is evolving into a worthy challenge and riders will once more have to dig deep. The winners in each category will not only be crowned the WC Champ but also receive a WC Winners Jersey. All podium winners will also receive prize money and must be present at prize giving at 16h00.

WCMTB XCO#1 : Course map

Although some of you may remember the 2nd Rhebokskloof event last year, the course this year has some surprises. Gratefully we won’t be climbing that massive hill that leads up to the single track. This year the course is also running in the opposite direction too with quite a nastly little climb up to the single track so jostling for a good start on that first climb may just make a difference. Then it’s back down and around the dam with lots of passing opportunity and then up into the hills before dropping back down to the valley floor with a sharp turn up through the gum trees and some more single track climbing. Your next stop is the feed zone and then a short single track into jeep track climb and drop down back to the start just below the dam.

4.95km per lap for everyone apart from the Nipper and Sprogs who will be riding a shortened route.

Conditions: the course is dry and dusty and sketchy in parts. A dribble of rain is forecast for Thursday, but this is unlikely to change the course. Thorns are aplenty around the course so please ensure that your Stans is topped up.

SUBARU CAPE TOWN / NOVUS HOLDINGS 2015 WESTERN CAPE MTB XCO CHAMPIONSHIPS

WP XCO Champs Poster

Leading up to the Western Cape MTB XCO Championships, below you will find additional information about the venue and track for the upcoming races.

VENUE

A sincere thank you to Dr. Corrie Muller and Hanno Lategan who were the inspiration behind the track at Stellenbosch University. In addition I would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Ilhaam Groenewald [Chief Director:Sport], Ms. Cindy van der Merwe [Maties Sport: Events Co-Ordinator], Mrs. Kim Coetzee [Maties Sport] and Ms. Candice Appollis [Sport Manager] at Stellenbosch University for making this possible.

It would be amiss to also not thank the administration, marketing and communication teams from Novus Holdings for their contribution and without whom this event would not have been possible.

TRACK

The track that you will be riding during the championships is in its first stage of evolution. It is the same track that will be used for both the South African University Games and South African MTB National Championships.

After the completion of the Western Cape Championships, the second phase of the evolution will commence, adding more purpose built single track and technical sections for the South African Championships.  Thank you to the University of Stellenbosch who has completely financed this track and to Bennett Nel and his team who have worked tirelessly to get this track into a position of readiness for tomorrow.   The track itself has 210m of climbing and measures 5.3km’s.  The features are steady changing climbs with rewarding down-hills.  Spectator points will be indicated on the track.

All those participating, we wish you the best of luck!! To those who are not participating, please join in on the atmosphere and fun in the spectators area.

This series is brought to you by the WP MTB Commission in partnership with:
